Kiwi jr. — Cooler Returns
LP, Sub Pop Records, 22 January 20201
[indie rock]
🇨🇦
EN: This is definitely the big outing of the week! I was saying a lot of good things about Kiwi jr. when I wrote my first article about the band in 2019. Soccer Money appeared on the excellent Mint Records. It was strong. Kiwi jr. has since made his way to Sub Pop Records, just like that. More than ever, its music is closer to the melodic irony of Pavement. More than ever, Kiwi jr. may claim a seat at the very top of the underground scene. Those who doubt the Canadian band (Toronto)’s ability to seize the Californian phlegm will be reassured with “Maid Marian’s Toast“. The rest oscillates between cool nineties and declaration of love to the jangle-pop scene that is so dear to Captured Tracks (see this new compilation). It’s frankly excellent, both contemporary (listen to the lyrics of “Cooler Returns“) and nostalgic of a golden era (“Omaha“). All this finally makes me think of my current place, Amsterdam.

Cheekface — Emphatically No.
LP, New Professor Music, 11 January 2021
[indie pop]
🇺🇸
EN: Cheekface is a tribute to junk food. See its covers (here). Listen to its music. It all comes back to pizza, hotdogs, soda, in short, everything that will soon be forbidden for health reasons. The band’s second album, Emphatically No., is coming out these days with a dose of irony to sweeten a few overly fat donuts. The voice is spoken throughout the album, and Cheekface never ends the series of pamphlets on life in the 21st century: it’s about the “creative” folks who work in cafés (“Best Life“), the sensitive people too easily offended (“Crying Back“), useless TED talks (“Calabasas“), the end of the human race (“Original Composition“), and so on. The band explores all this in a dedicated video (here). For the rest, Cheekface alternates rhythms with grace, it’s dancing, fun, well-produced, nineties, meta, in short, it’s extremely well done. One of  2021 first must-have!

D.E.N.I.S. — MY 1ST TAPE I’M DENIS
LP, 21 June 2020
[egg punk]
🇷🇴
EN: D.E.N.I.S. is a project originating from Bucharest which released its first album last June. Right in the egg punk style — this very speedy punk for fluorescent green flies, D.E.N.I.S. is a succession of futuristic hits hard to ignore. My favorite is “Citadine Soundbox“, a real going back to the future. This LP is a bit like those movies where the characters, set in 2050, all have latex, nails, and punk crests à la Camden Town. What’s not to love about it?

Skegss — “Wake Up
Singles, Loma Vista Recordings, 10 December 2020
[indie pop]
🇦🇺
EN: As I have said several times, my relationship with Skegss is difficult since our incomplete interview. Yes, but every time the band puts something out, it’s too good for me to ignore. “Wake Up“, the band’s latest single, is a great illustration of the fact. Who would have believed it? A Skegss lover? Yeah? Well… yeah, it works perfectly. Ben Reed has a great voice, which is hard to guess on the band’s more slacker songs. So, here you go.
