Charles Moothart – Soft Crime

EN: It’s been a long time (too long) since we last heard from CFM. He is coming back these days with an EP that has not lost anything of its superb. The three songs that compose Soft Crime have everything of the great CFM era, starting with an impeccable production and an acoustic drum that contrasts perfectly with a stoner-like guitar. The rhythms often take us by surprise, see “Losing Ground“; Charles never stops exploring his “end of the world” desire from various immersive angles. “Blood Machine” seems to indicate a new direction; I will not be surprised if his next album strongly resembles it.
FR: Il y a bien (trop) longtemps que nous n’avions pas entendu parlé de CFM. Cela qui publie désormais sous son véritable nom revient ces jours-ci avec un EP qui n’a rien perdu de sa superbe. Les trois morceaux qui composent Soft Crime ont tout de la grande époque CFM, a commencé par une production irréprochable et une batterie acoustique qui contraste parfaitement avec une guitare aux allures stoners. Les rythmes nous prennent souvent à contresens, voir “Losing Ground” ; Charles n’en finit pas d’explorer sa fin du monde sous diverses coutures décidément très immersives. “Blood Machine” semble indiquer la nouvelle direction de l’artiste, je ne serai pas surpris que son prochain album y ressemble fortement.

The Cowboy – Riddles from the Universe

EN: I already talked about The Cowboy in 2020, when he was releasing the very good Feel the Chi Releasing from You. It reminded me of the garage rock scene, the DNA of Still in Rock. He’s back these days with an LP that’s sure to please. The album is indeed muscular, its non-synchronized aspect produces beautiful things, and we can indeed find some well oiled garage protrusions. The whole is very coherent (maybe too much), almost suffocating. I never dreamed of being strangled by a cowboy… and I like it!
FR: J’ai déjà parlé des Cowboy en 2020, lorsqu’il faisait paraître le très bon Feel the Chi Releasing from You. Il me rappelait à la scène garage rock, l’ADN de Still in Rock. Il revient ces jours-ci avec un LP qui va faire plaisir dans les chaumières. L’album est effectivement très musclé, son aspect non-synchronisé produit de belles choses, et on y retrouve effectivement quelques saillies d’un garage bien huilé. Le tout est très cohérent (peut-être trop), presque étouffant. Moi qui n’ai jamais rêvé de me faire étrangler par un cowboy…

Chubby and the Gang – The Mutt’s Nuts

EN: What a bunch of good guys! Not content with delivering the best introduction of the year, Chubby and the Gang have just struck a blow with a 2nd studio album that never liked the Dictators so much. Punk has been embellishing the scene with post-punk albums, but Chubby is doing seventies punk rock – which earns them an immediate place in my slacker music history. The Mutt’s Nuts never let up, the songs are anvil-like blows that only match the New York scene of a bygone era. The singer’s hoarse voice comes straight out of a pub, the solos are not afraid of a little hard rock, in short, Chubby couldn’t be better named!
FR: Quelle bande de gentils bourrins ! Non content de délivrer la meilleure introduction de l’année, Chubby and the Gang vient de frapper un grand coup avec un 2ème album studio qui n’a jamais autant aimé les Dictators. Le punk a enhavi la scène à coup d’albums post-punk, mais Chubby, lui, fait dans le punk-rock époque seventies — ce qui lui vaut une place immédiate dans mon histoire de la musique slacker. The Mutt’s Nuts ne désenfle jamais, les morceaux sont des coups d’enclumes qui n’ont d’égal que la scène new-yorkaise d’une époque révolue. La voix éraillée du chanteur sort tout droit d’un pub, les solos n’ont pas peur d’un peu de hard rock, bref, Chubby ne pourrait pas mieux porter son p’tit nom !

Big Bopper – New Mutations

EN: Big Bopper is a B-movie in music, an introduction to the Halloween 2021 period, a monstrosity, a modeling clay that turned into a vile neon green liquid. The thing is sublimated by a DIY production, short and instinctive tracks, yeah, Big Bopper has indeed just released one of the very best punk albums of the year 2021. The guitar and drums are glued together throughout the album, while the singer goes out of his way to call himself a loser. It’s loud, 2000, very good.
FR: Big Bopper, c’est un film de série B en musique, une introduction à la période Halloween 2021, une monstruosité, de la pâte à modeler qui s’est transformée en un infect liquide vert fluo. La chose est sublimée par une production DIY, des morceaux brefs et instinctifs, ouais, Big Bopper vient bel et bien de faire paraître l’un de tout meilleurs albums de punk de l’année 2021. La guitare et la batterie sont collées tout au long de l’album, tandis que son chanteur s’évertue à se dire un looser. C’est fort, 2000, très bon.
