Worn-Tin – Good Morning
Demos, 3 July 2020
[indie pop]
EN: I’ve already written several times on Worn-Tin’s account. This Californian artist got noticed last year with some outstanding singles. If I’m still waiting for an album, he recently gave us some consolation with 30 new demos. “I gave myself a goal, write 30 songs in 30 days. I started June 1st and went thru June 30th. The guidelines being I had to finish whatever I was working on that day but it could be about anything in any genre. I tried to stay open, saying a lot of what’s on my mind whether it was silly or weird,” he says. That’s a great idea. Artistic constraint often liberates, proof being given by this frantic rhythm that forced him to dig up some pop melodies that would probably have escaped him. The result is very impressive. Several of the demos we find here are amongst the best pop songs of 2020. Here are my favorites, the ones I’m looking forward to hearing after mastering: “Unit,” “They’re Here,” “Cinnamon” and “Bassboy.”
“I gave myself a goal, write 30 songs in 30 days. I started June 1st and went thru June 30th. The guidelines being I had to finish whatever I was working on that day but it could be about anything in any genre. I tried to stay open, saying a lot of what’s on my mind whether it was silly or weird“, qu’il dit.

G.T.R.R.C – G.T.R.R.C II
Compilations, 17 July 2020
[garage rock]
EN: The danger with compilations is that we often tend to be overwhelmed by the flow. G.T.R.C II is no exception to the rule. Made of 20 covers, it features the cream of the trashy garage punk scene. In the year 2020, sanitized by a hydroalcoholic gel, this album spits all over, it’s full of germs everywhere, and we’re rubbing ourselves with these songs getting more and more DIY. My favorites are “Food Fight” (by G.T.R.R.C), “Getting Nowhere Fast” (by R.M.F.C), the speedy “Don’t Bring Me Down” (Snooper), “Rock-N-Roll DJ” (by G.T.R.R.C), and “Lights Out” (by Satanic Togas). The whole thing is organized by G.T.R.R.C., a combo between Research Reactor Corp and Gee Tee. Boom.
Boom.

Sonic Youth – From The Basement (Full Set)
Video, August 2007
[experimental rock]
EN: The thrill! In August 2007, the late Sonic Youth recorded a session From The Basement. It had never been published before, but here it is now. And what energy! True to itself, the band only plays 5 songs for more than 30 minutes. It’s very close to what they used to deliver live. The first slap arrives as soon as “The Sprawl” with long instrumental phases. And I’m not even talking about the power of “Incinerate,” or the grand finale with “Pink Steam.” I poured a tear. I think I’m going to get a tattoo saying “ninetiessss foreverrr.” For the rest, I refer you to my “Sonic Youth week” which includes an interview with Thurston Moore: it’s here.
FR: Les frissons! En août 2007, feu Sonic Youth a enregistré une session From The Basement.

Fuzz – “Returning”
Single, In the Red Recordings, 22 July 2020
[psych stoner]
EN: What can I say? You all know Fuzz, the band is responsible for killing pop music. Its first two albums also killed the 2010s. The third one will mark the 2020s, which we know already from the first single, faithful to its death-cult-stoner-psychedelic universe. Even if the album is scheduled for Halloween, it would be too stupid not to listen to it without a black cape while drinking the upstairs neighbor’s blood. Oh, and if the wait is still too long, I recommend the excellent What We Do in the Shadows TV series. As for Fuzz, he plays guitar when he’s in the shadows.
FR: Que dire ? Et si l’attente est toujours trop longue, je vous conseille l’excellente série What We Do in the Shadows.
