My first article on Vaguess is more than three years old, and I still remember the feeling. An artist, it seemed, was able to deliver a “patient zero” garage, without artificial additives, preservatives or colorings. A few months later,  I had the honor of releasing his album, After X comes V, in world premiere. And in 2017, I finally fell in love with One Man Trash, an album I call the “original slacker”. In the meantime, I asked Vinny Earley (or Vinny Diesel, in “homage to the best American actor alive”) to marry me, but he refused. It’s a bad story.

Today, I’m taking my chance again: Vinny, would you marry me? To convince you (editor’s noteto this point, the article is no longer for the reader, but for Vinny alone), I managed to release your new album in intergalactic exclusivity. It’s called Have A Good Summer and it’s your best produced album, but you must already know that, after all, you composed it. So if I can’t tell you anything about this LP that you don’t already know, let me tell you what it does to me.

When I click on play, my heart beats. Do you want to know why? It’s because your songs do what only very good music can do: be simple and beautiful. Your songs are not psychedelic or experimental labyrinths. You’re not looking for that, as “Some Kinda Meaningful” and “Nevermind” clearly show. That is what sets you apart from the others, probably your modesty, but I want to emphasize that point. When your album is not something, you are not trying to integrate a little of that thing to satisfy some of your listeners. In short, your albums are never a patchwork of different musical styles.

Your songs are generally short, the chorus doesn’t come back 10 times (I really like it Vinny, you know, the absence of any commercial approach that pushes other artists to perform 10x their choruses throughout the album with the hope that we will remember a track or two in the end), the sound of the guitar is seventies without ever being cheesy, your lyrics are straight to the point and sometimes leave me dreamy, in short, you hit the nail on the headYou always go one way and do it super well. The question, every time you release something new, is then to find out which new way you have chosen this time. I wonder what you have in store for us with this Have A Good Summer.

I think I got the answer when I first listened to “Dead Before Dawn“. I understood the artwork of this album (even though you had already tipped me off with “A Long Time“) and saw us as in Brokeback Mountain, you and me, cowboys for life. I thought we could invite Country Teasers and Ween over for our barbecue, what do you think? Oh, and of course, the love song you composed for me, “Ran To You“, truely warmed my heart. I saw us traveling, maybe to California? After all, you’re also more Californian than ever on this album. I want “Two Hands” as an example, a song you wrote for me to go skateboarding with you. You also pay tribute to Los Angeles’ (power) pop scene on “On The Lawn“, the one of the 70s, the one of the Nerves.

Yes, that’s it: with this album, you combine for the first time California and Texas, you unify the nation, it’s ‘Vinny For President’, I even found you a campaign slogan: “Vinny, liberal cowboy for a better nation”. You’ll play “Roadside Grave” in your rallies, it’ll be fabulous, I can already see us at the White House.

The conclusion is a logical one for me, Vinny. Let me summarize here in 4 points: your album combines California pop chords with the dusty sound of Texas, your voice flirts with power pop until the last seconds, you never try to pull your songs on dozens of choruses, neither to stuff your albums with elements from other musical styles, which gives you simplicity. You have one formula per album (here “California meets Texas”), and it works perfectly. If only all artists had the same approach, it would avoid us the pretentious and inaudible projects that Bandcamp is flooded with. The album smells like palm trees and boots, it’s splendid, Vinny, stop messing around, let’s get married.

FRENCH VERSION

****
