Houndstooth est un groupe originaire de Portland, composé de 5 membres, et auteur d’une Indie Pop que l’on qualifie pour le moins sans complexe. Usant de toutes les recettes qui font d’un morceau un bon morceau de pop indépendante, Houndstooth délivre un premier single, “Beachbummer” au comble du genre. Les riffs de guitare surgissent par intermittence, la batterie y est d’une régularité sans faille et la voix de colle parfaitement à l’univers du titre. Les paroles elles aussi s’inscrivent à 100 % dans le genre du morceau.
Houndstooth semble avoir pensé à tout, créant quatre minutes d’une Indie Pop gorgée de sable comme jamais. Leur premier album paraitra au début de l’année 2013, voilà de quoi nous rendre impatients. Attention, une condition toutefois, Houndstooth ne s’écoute qu’en bikini.

Houndstooth is a band from Portland and knows exactly how to produce perfect indie pop. The guitar riffs are really catchy and the rhythm section is very tight. “Beachbummer“, the last single released by the band, is filled with sand, few minutes of a warm summer precisely as we like it. The first album will be released at the start of 2013, it’s gonna be hard to wait.

1. How would you describe your music to someone who has not heard about you yet?
Comment décririez-vous votre musique à quelqu’un qui n’a jamais entendu parler de vous ?
Sincere, ecstatic rock and roll. We’re influenced by bands like Television, the Everly Brothers, the Stax soul catalog and American country greats like Charlie Feathers. We love Sandy Denny’s sorrowful croon, Gillian Welch’s incomparable song craft, and Richard Thompson and Tom Verlaine’s guitar magic. And of course, Bruce Springsteen.
Sincère, un rock sans complexe. Nous sommes influencés par des groupes tels que Television, the Everly Brothers, le label Stax et la musique country américaine tel que Charlie Feathers. On aime également beaucoup la tristesse musicale de Sandy Denny, Gillian Welch, Richard Thompson et le son de guitare de Tom Verlaine. Et bien entendu, Bruce Springsteen.

2. How come you named the band Houndstooth?
Pourquoi avoir nommé le groupe Houndstooth ?
Although most people associate our name with the ubiquitous textile pattern, the name was actually inspired by our love of dogs and the pleasing sound and image of the word itself.
Bien que beaucoup associent le nom de notre groupe avec le motif textile du même nom, il est en réalité inspiré par notre amour des chiens. On aime aussi la sonorité et l’image qu’il renvoie.

3. Where do you met each other ?
Où vous êtes-vous rencontré ?
We (John and Katie) met briefly in Austin, Texas circa 2006 and were big fans of each other’s musical projects until fate brought us together in Portland two years ago where we started writing songs together. Luckily some of John’s favorite musical collaborators (Courtney Sheedy and Mike Yun) were excited about starting a band, and with the addition of Brette Marie Way on drums, Houndstooth was born!
Nous nous sommes rencontrés à Austin (Texas) en 2006 et nous étions tous les deux fans des projets musicaux de l’autre. Nous nous sommes revus à Portland il y a deux ans et avons alors commencé à écrire des morceaux ensemble. Par chance, des amis de John (Courtney Sheedy et Mike Yun) étaient vraiment enthousiastes à l’idée de lancer un groupe, et avec l’addition de Brette Marie Way à la batterie, Houndstooth était né.

4. You are five in the band for one singer, what about the rest of the band?
Vous êtes cinq dans le groupe pour un chanteur, que fait le reste du groupe ?
Houndstooth is Katie Bernstein and John Gnorski (songwriting, guitars, singing), Courtney Sheedy (bass), Mike Yun (organ, guitar) and Brette Marie Way (drums). Brette was playing with us until she was 8 months pregnant and has just recently birthed the littlest Houndstooth member, George (!), so we’re currently playing with the fabulous Graeme Gibson on drums.
Katie Bernstein et John Gnorski sont à la guitare, au chant et écrivent les titres. Mike Yun joue de l’orgue et de la guitare. Brette Marie Way est à la batterie. Brette a joué avec nous jusqu’à ses huit mois de grossesses et elle vient de donner naissance au plus jeune des membres de Houndstooth, George. Nous jouons donc à présent avec le fabuleux Graeme Gibson à la batterie.

5. Which artists inspire you?
Quels artistes vous inspirent ?
Dead Moon, who have been playing and touring together for 40 years and still write and record incredible material, are a constant musical and life inspiration. We’re also very inspired by the writers Carson McCullers and Alice Munro, photographers William Eggleston, Cindy Sherman, and Robert Adams, visual artists Alex Katz, H.C. Westermann, and folk artists like Emery Blagdon.
En premier lieu, Dead Moon, qui ont joué et fait des tournées ensemble pendant 40 ans et qui écrivent avec d’incroyables chansons. Ils sont une source d’inspirations constantes. On est également très inspiré par Carson McCullers et Alice Munro, le photographe William Eggleston, Cindy Sherman, Robert Adams. Aussi, les deux artistes Alex Katz et H.C. Westermann, et pour finir, Emery Blagdon qui est un artiste folk.

6. Tell me one creazy this about the track “Beachbummer“.
Racontez-vous une chose surprenante à propos du titre “Beachbummer”.
“Beachbummer” was inspired by a bag of letters, diaries and photos I found next to a trash bin in Brooklyn a couple of years ago from the 70’s of a girl who visited Antigua, became entangled in a forbidden love affair and struggled to place it in the context of her New York prep school reality.
“Beachbummer” a été créé à partir d’un sac rempli de lettres, de journaux intimes et de photos que j’ai trouvé à côté d’une poubelle à Brooklyn il y a quelques années. Il appartenait à une fille qui avait visité Antigua durant les années 70 et qui s’est empêtrée dans une histoire d’amour interdite.

7. Is your first album ready ?
À propos de votre premier album, est-il prêt ?
We are currently in the process of finishing recording our first album, which should be finished by early Spring 2013. Right now we have a 7″ record you can buy in physical or digital form via our BandC amp (here).
