Royal Trux  Quantum Entanglement
LP, Fat Possum Records,
29 November 2019
[Indie rock]

ENNot having spotted Quantum Entanglement before the 2019 rankings is (for now) my biggest mistake. Royal Trux is a mythical band from the 1990s that is now engaged in publishing the most misunderstood albums. Their new LP, released last November, is no exception to the rule: it looks like the patchwork of three albums that would be played at the same time. It’s an LP like no one else knows how to produce anymore, in the great tradition of Matador’s indie rock music. The three songs listed below have that cool almost grungy feeling, the voice of a whiskey drinker, the arrangements of a Ween and the melodies of a Britney Spears under acid.

The Chats – High Risk Behaviour
LP, Bargain Bin Records, 27 March 2020
[slacker punk]

ENLast July, I published an article entitled “The Chats, the slackers who tried too hard“. I was convinced that the band was completely overplaying slacker music, which is killing the genre. I still am. That didn’t stop me, however, from ranking the band among the best slackers of the decade (see). The Chats have for them a redneck energy that I like to praise from time to time (see also). They may be too much, but they deliver (in studio, at least). For that reason, the release of their next album, High Risk Behaviour, will be a real treat for anyone interested in slacker music. “The Clap” (definition of the Urban Dictionary: “It’s fuckin gonorrhea”) that the band unveiled last week is a great example of that. The Chats are getting ready to kill slacker music by abusing all its codes, but before the funeral, the party promises to be great.

Double Date With Death – L’Au-Delà
LP, Howlin Banana Records, 10 January 2020
[psych pop]

ENHowlin Banana Records is one of the best labels of the 2010s (ranking). I can’t count the number of articles on its account, or rather, on the dozens of bands it has released over the years. On January 10th, Howlin killed the game when it comes to psychedelic pop with the release of L’Au-Delà, an album composed by Double Date With Death. The band, originally from Montreal, released such an intriguing pop sound that the label broke its golden rule of only releasing French bands. That’s something! “Fluorescent“, which the band chose to spearhead, is a faraway track that will take all the dreamers of the psychedelic scene to an experience of full consciousness. L’Au-Delà is (for the time being) the decade best psychedelic album sung in French. It could very much keep its crown for at least a few years. If the invasion of the Body Snatchers were to finally happen, Double Date With Death would be the first to know about it. You can’t sign a pact with the Martians without getting some exceptional melodies out of it.

A Canadian Tribute to Jay Reatard
LP, Retard Records, 13 January 2020
[compilation]

ENIn 2015, Retard Records released Blood Visions By Retard Records & Friends. It was great. He’s doing it again with 12 Canadian bands, this time across Jay’s whole discography. The label had only given a few days for recording these songs, a challenge that finishes capturing the sense of urgency in Jay Retard’s music. In terms of my favorite songs, I choose Paul Jacobs tracks (no big surprise), the cover of “Stacye” by No Fix as well as Alex Cyprine’s version of “D.O.A.”. The whole album is foggy, smoky, drugged.

FR En 2015, Retard Records faisait paraître Blood Visions By Retard Records & Friends.

Bad Pelicans – Zero Talent
Single, Chrysanthem Records, 20 January 2020
[punk]

ENLast year, the Bad Pelicans band went to Seattle for the recording of their second album. That’s intriguing. We’ll, however, have to wait for a few more months to listen to what the ironic-magnifico-troublesome band worked on in the land of Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains. Before that, the band is releasing on February 7th an EP recorded in March 2018, Underground. As an introduction, “Zero Talent” comes to tell us that the Bad Pels haven’t lost any of their tricks, definitely worthy of guys wearing long black leather jackets. It’s punk. It’s good. It’s incomprehensible. I’m in.

I’m in.
