Erik Nervous – Bugs!!
LP, 4 December 2020
[garage rock]
EN: Erik Nervous has been releasing EPs and other garage punk singles since 2015 – without any concessions. This year, he released Bugs!, a high-level EP. He’s coming back these days with a new LP, Bugs!!, following a Drunken Sailor LP released last year. Every time I listen to it, I think of my interview with Bench Press, when the band recognized that “Devo is having a real zeitgeist moment right now” (link). Erik is determined to mix garage pink and robotic post-punk-sci-fi (like in the movie The Fly). Erik Nervous is the music of 2020 as if it was played in 1981.
Chacune de ses écoutes me fait penser à mon interview avec Bench Press, lorsque le groupe me disait “Devo is having a real zeitgeist moment right now” (lien).

Dumb Punts – The Big One Two
LP, Pissfart Records, 9 October 2020
[slacker pop]
EN: Several times, I’ve talked about Dumb Punts, the band from Melbourne that seems not to be done with slacker music. Last October, they released their second studio album, The Big One Two, and they didn’t disappoint. Songs like “Up All Night” and “Indents” remind me of the early 2010’s pop (jangle) scene of Peach Kelli and the scene. The rest is an endless feast, and if one could have wished for more flashy songs, we must already treasure a few of them – starting with “Didn’t Say Anyone to Anything“.

Oh Sees – Panther Rotate
LP, Castle Face Records, 11 December 2020
[psych]
EN: The album is not fully available at the time of writing, but that’s okay. Last September, I talked about his LP Protean Threat, and I was pointing out how Oh Sees seemed to enshrine the domination of robots over the human race (read). The first singles of Panther Rotate follow the same logic; indeed, they were composed and recorded during the same period. Let the humanists go, and let the world of futuristic movies that refuse to talk about the collaboration between humans and robots shine brighter: Oh Sees says it, this LP is the last experimentation before the great replacement.

Brick Head – Thick as Bricks
LP, 23 July 2020
[garage punk]
EN: Brick Head, it’s a band from Melbourne (one more) who, last summer, released its very first LP. If we already knew Sarah Hardiman from Deaf Wish and The Opals, the artist takes refuge in a garage punk that is also quite post-apocalyptic. This is definitely the theme of the week. As its name suggests, Brick Head strives to give us the same rhythm throughout the entire LP, as if it could get it into our hardened skulls. All the garage punk amateurs will cherish Thick as Bricks as the last obscure addition in their music library – right before 2021 ones.
