Ty Segall & Mikal Cronin – Pop Song
EP, Goodbye Boozy Digital, 6 May 2020
[garage rock]
EN: Many times, we’ve talked about Ty Segall going back to his roots, but this has never been truer than with Pop Song. So, yeah, the Ty Segall of the late 2000s is back indeed! Accompanied by his sidekick Mikal Cronin, with whom he composed the brilliant Reverse Shark Attack, he delivers three songs faithful to the style of the above-mentioned album, and it feels good! What? Oh shit, I’m told that these tracks are actually from 2009 and that it’s only a re-release. Well… Ty is not going back to his roots, then, but here’s a chance to bump into some good old garage rock, perfect timing for the end of a lockdown, don’t you think?

Products – On The Dotted Line
LP, Heavy Meadow Records, 7 September 2018
[garage pop]

EN: Poducts is a band from Minneapolis (the city of Uranium Club…) who has released its first EP via Heavy Meadow Records in September 2018. If I’m only talking about it today, it’s because I recently got my hands on it. And that it reminds me of the above-mentioned band with its fiery post-skate. All is good in it. “Drawing of a Gun” delivers the most intoxicating pop, while “Second Set” plays the cathartic brawler ala Pinch Points. Couldn’t miss it. Let’s hope the album follows quickly, and that it’s punk. The band seems to go in that direction, see the live recently posted on Bandcamp (link).

Opinion – Desire, Perfume & Slowly
EP, Flippin’ Freaks, 20 December 2019
[post-nineties]
EN: It’s not the first time I have spoken to you about Opinion (here is the first time). His post-nineties music is excellent, a real dive into the phantasmagorical era. Post-nineties? “(adj) Describes a music genre which mimics the codes of 90s’ rock’n’roll (irony, detachment, reverberations, lo-fi production) in the years 2010’…” Virtual grandson of Elliot Smith and Sonic Youth, and Duster (yes, it was an orgy), he creates a 90s spleen that reminds me of the most painful moments of Good Will Hunting. His new album, actually composed in 2018 and never finished until then, is a true masterpiece of the genre. Just listen to the bass line of “Turtles“, the speed of “Perfection” and the threatening dance of “Ephemeral Recess” (my favorite) to start with. It’s full of great ideas; the shades of grey have rarely been so expressive.
Post-nineties ? “(adj) Describes a music genre which mimics the codes of 90s’ rock’n’roll (irony, detachment, reverberations, lo-fi production) in the years 2010’…”.

Laser Background – Evergreen Legend
LP, 1 May 2020
[pop]
EN: Laser Background is the project of Andy Molholt (Coughy, Speedy Ortiz) who, last April, released his third album called Evergreen Legend. The thing is very surprising. Although he has indeed decided to use an indie-pop effect on the voice, the music alternates between nineties slices and afro-pop-ish things to make granny dance. The experience is genuinely schizophrenic, as if his music was delirious and ultra lucid at the same time. Not everything is a hit, and the game-video aspect sometimes makes me dizzy, but take a look at “Cerulan 20%” to convince yourself that Laser Background sometimes delivers some unique, truly unique.
