New : King Charles the Martyr – Night Machine (Indie Rock)

—– French Version

Revoilà King Charles the Martyr, revoilà une bonne dose d’énergie fifties façon Chuck Berry.

Vient ensuite “Meet Me In The Tomb“, un morceau bluesy fidèle à l’univers du groupe. Le titre est d’ailleurs inspiré d’un morceau d’Howlin’ Wolf nommé “Meet Me In The Bottom” (ici). King Charles the Martyr a pour devise de dire “all of our songs are much better live“.

—– English Version

Once again, here is King Charles the Martyr with a great deal of energy in a fifties, Chuck Berry style. After two shows at the Mercury Lounge, King Charles is back with a new EP called Night Machine. Closer to a Richard Hell & The Voidoids universe (here) than the first one, it is diverse and well executed.

The first title is “Party Natural“. The guitar part was written by Scott 15 years ago. The result is a very catchy track in which the studio work is outstanding, like an early Strokes (“Reptilla” ?!). Then comes “Meet Me In The Tomb“, a bluesy title faithful to the band universe. Not to mention, the name itself is inspired by an old Howlin’ Wolf song called “Meet Me In The Bottom” (ici). The chorus is more nineties, more alternative, closer to the real Tombs in Manhattan (a famous prison). The last title is “Night Machine”, written in Iceland. Recorded right after its creation, King Charles members judge this version too slow. I personally think that the result is more than interesting, breaking with the usual rhythm of the band. In addition, the presence of brass in the chorus gives it a rare charm. King Charles likes to say that “all of our songs are much better live”. For sure, it is easier “to reconstruct the Mississippi whiskey sounds of a forgotten generation” with a hallucinated audience. But if you don’t have the chance to see them play in New York, trust me, these studios versions are terrific.
