KARKARA – Nowhere Land
LP, Stolen Body Records, 13 November 2020
[psych rock]
EN: Karkara is a band from Toulouse whose album I’ve been waiting for a long time. It has finally been released on the always excellent Stolen Body Records. From the very first track, you can imagine that Karkara’s thing is the kind of big psych-rock that was born in the 1970s. Despite some early drone influences, we understand with the next three songs – one of the most beautiful trios of the year 2020 – that Karkara is not falling for it. And what a monstrous album! Without going on the Oh Sees or King Gizzard road, Karkara shows that another way is possible. It is noisier and black, and hardcore, and fantastic.

JW Francis – We Share a Similar Joy
LP, Sunday Best Recordings, 6 November 2020
[bedroom pop]
EN: JW Francis is a New-York based artist who intends to bring back to life the beautiful bedroom pop that made our early 2010s. He’s releasing his first album these days via the London label Sunday Best Recordings, and it’s a win on all levels. Not only does JW Francis unpack a lot of very cool melodies to make the Queen of England dance all night long, but he also never stops varying styles, going from indie-pop to jizz jazz. He even pays himself the luxury of a few jangle-pop melodies, in short, it’s a true demonstration (and a very well-produced one).
Cerise sur le gateau, JW Francis m’a récemment “for [my] encouragement 2 years ago, it really helped!”. Voilà qui fait toujours plaisir.

Parquet Courts – “Hey Bug”
Single, 10 November 2020
[indie rock]
EN: It’s just a single, but what a single! I’m not in the habit of writing about lone wolves in my Delusions articles, especially as the end of the year approaches and I still have many albums to unveil. But, Parquet Courts is Parquet Courts. Recorded in 2013 (just after Light Up Gold), Andrew Savage just released it recently to celebrate the band’s 10th anniversary. The song is faithful to Parquet Courts’ speedy punk – à la Tyvek, just the way we like it. As for the rest, here’s what he says: “Editing the sequence for a record is often a tough process, and when it’s over it’s typically such a relief that I’ll purge it from my memory entirely. And now I’m listening to ‘Hey Bug’ these seven years later and thinking what a cool song it is.”
Pour le reste, voici ce qu’il en dit : “Editing the sequence for a record is often a tough process, and when it’s over it’s typically such a relief that I’ll purge it from my memory entirely. And now I’m listening to ‘Hey Bug’ these seven years later and thinking what a cool song it is“.

Kikagaku Moyo – “Smoke And Mirrors” (Live At Levitation)
Video, The Reverberation Appreciation Society, 10 November 2020
[psych rock]
EN: To celebrate its existence, Levitation (a psychedelic festival that I’ve already mentioned several times) has decided to release several live vinyls. On January 15, it will be Kikagaku Moyo’s turn. The sound of his performance delivered in 2014 will then resound in the haunted houses of those who got it before it was sold out. For the others, we will keep on watching this video of “Smoke and Mirrors.” I am stunned by the quality of the picture, if some of you know a little bit more about the filter applied, I’m a taker (thibault@stillinrock.com). In the meantime, what a band! (see my interview with them in 2013: here).
