Jim Shorts – “Angel Songs
Single, Solidarity Club Records, Today
[indie rock nineties]

EN: Jim Shorts will release his latest album on September 18th. It will be called Late To The Feast, and that day, I’ll be joyful and… sad. I ranked the band’s previous essay at the gates of the top 30 albums of the 2010s (ranking), and “Open Arms of a Canyon” in the top 20 songs (ranking). I have the highest regard for Jim Shorts, which I described as the child of Built to Spill and a slacker (here). But now is a time for a celebration! I’m very happy indeed to release the band’s latest single, “Angel Songs,” in world premiere. True to itself (i.e., excellent), Jim Shorts takes the nostalgia of the 90s and puts it at the service of pop melodies and realistic lyrics. Jim, I will continue to embrace dualism with you for a long time, as you requested in the aforementioned title.

FR: Le 18 septembre prochain, Jim Shorts fera paraître son dernier album, Late To The Feast.

Silverbacks – Fad
LP, Central Tones, 17 July 2020
[alt rock]
EN: Silverbacks is a band from Dublin who has thought about everything. The band has been releasing EPs and singles since 2017, without ever giving us the pleasure of an album. But now is the time. Fad oscillates between alternative rock and post-punk for the joy of those who have ever ventured to listen to R.E.M. and other more in-your-face compositions. With “Dunkirk” and “Pink Tide,” it asserts his dancing desires in a song that will probably not surprise the UK rock music fans. Silverbacks is particularly inspired when it tried to play tracks that keep their college simplicity, like “Drink It Down” or “Last Orders” (ala Canshaker Pi). As for more grandiloquent music, there’s always PUP – [favorite song: “Drink It Down“].

The Cowboy – Feel the Chi Releasing from You
7′, Feel It Record, 13 July 2020
[garage rock]

EN: The Cowboys were putting  out Room of Clons last April. It was futuristic. The answer didn’t take long to come: here’s The Cowboy (without the “s”) releasing Feel the Chi Releasing from You, a big 7inch made of three garage songs 100% pure juice. “The Mist” attacks in force à la Country Teasers, while “El Poño” flirts with more instrumental things, a kind of Slint meeting an old sixties garage. “Jellyroll” delays, but it’s already too late. In the end, the Cowboys remind us where they come from and that a good little carnage is always appreciable. I shall add them somewhere on my list of best cowboy songs (list) – [favorite song: “The Mist“].

FR: The Cowboys faisaient Room of Clons en avril dernier.

Blacklisters – Fantastic Man
LP, Learning Curve, Buzzhowl / A Tant Rêver Du Roi Records, 28 August 2020
[garage noisy]
EN: Wow, it’s going to hurt. Blacklisters is an English band from Leeds who, a few days ago, released one of the best noisy things of the last few months. The band’s first album in five years, Fantastic Man is indeed overwhelming. Conceived as such, it never takes the intensity down a notch: all the songs are progressive, and the album (taken as a whole) always finds a way to add a layer of sound. “Strange Face” and “Mambo No. 5” are two examples of the most dazzling things Blacklisters can do. It’s super British, and you come out of it like Grandma’s cat that made an accidental spin in the washing machine, a smile on your face while your eardrums are whistling – [favorite song: “Strange Face“].
